If you are a freelance linguist looking to branch out into other language services but don’t know where to start, subtitling may be a great option for you. Subtitling is a niche in the language services market, and there is a high demand for transcribers and translators trained in this art form, even in the age of AI and machine translation. And, subtitling isn’t limited to the entertainment industry, as it’s a skill that can be applied to any specialization or field.

This 1.5-hour webinar focuses on giving you a brief introduction into the basics of subtitling. Topics covered include:

• An introduction to the subtitling, including the time and space constraints and other challenges of subtitling.

• A comparison of the most popular free and paid subtitling tools.

• An overview of common pricing structures in subtitling.

• Recommendations and exclusive discounts for subtitling courses.

• A curated list of essential resources for beginners.

About the presenter:

Molly Yurick is a Spanish-to-English subtitler and translator whose work has reached viewers worldwide. She has subtitled some of Netflix’s most popular series, including Money Heist and Berlin, and her work also appears on other major streaming platforms such as Amazon Prime and Disney+. Beyond audiovisual translation, Molly specializes in tourism and hospitality translation, working with leading hotel chains and international airlines to help them communicate with cultural authenticity and connect with English-speaking audiences. She has also served as deputy chair of the American Translators Association’s Public Relations Committee since 2018.

Nowadays, we use abbreviations and acronyms to speed up and make our communications more efficient. These shortened words and phrases, once limited to specialized fields, have become common in our everyday written and spoken interactions. For example, in the medical field, these terms are used not only in communications among healthcare providers but also in conversations between patients and providers.

During this webinar, the presenter will cover basic grammatical concepts, the most used medical abbreviations, their meanings, and where to find them. The class will be conducted in English, with some examples provided in Spanish.

In the past few years, inclusion has been in everyone's scope. As language professionals not only do we need to correctly relay the message we're translating, but we also need to make sure none of what we're saying is misunderstood or aggressive in any way. In order to do so, we need to practice our sympathy and a better understanding of the matter.

In this webinar, we'll cover basic LGBTIQ+ terminology, and we'll talk about how we can think of being inclusive in the language we use in a respectful and tactful way. Come ready to wear your rainbow-y glasses!
